I’m known for photography of people and the built environment + having fun ‘at the same time!’   Couldn’t resist creating this picture of George, Thomas, Teddy and Abe which was inspired by, Adam Lerner, friend and Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in  Denver.  Thanks to these great guys from Rapid City, South Dakota.  Happy Presidents’ Day!

Have you been to Mount Rushmore?  I went as a youngster on a family driving vacation through the Badlands.  Pretty amazing.  About 2 million people each year visit this granite sculpture by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum.

And, a little chocolate and something in red lace sends a message too!

The Anticipation is over.

The new Clifford Still Museum is open!

This visitor seated to look at this painting of mostly dark tones with red lightning plus white yellow vertical streaks seems to match in line, color and gesture.  It could look suspiciously set up, but it was not.  My attention as I entered this Hitchcock Gallery from a little zen-like terrace was on the painting, then upward to the ceiling treatment with mini oval windows and then onto the woman as she sat down.  Love that split second thought of Henri Cartier-Bresson and camera grab that is one of my reasons for getting up everyday.

Phil Bender at Emmanuel Gallery

Phil glibly thanked the Mayor of Denver, his friends, late Mother, “The Academy” and his first and second wives when accepting the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts at the Ellie, on November 3rd.  Phil is the founder of Pirate Contemporary Art in 1980 followed by a 31 year history of showing emerging Colorado, regional and international artists.

What’s a photographer to do?  You are a non-working guest at a wonderful, fun, artful gala event and your natural urge is to capture it all.  You have another sip of the fabulous extra dry, extra dirty martini with three olives, get out your iphone and take the picture!  The DJ is spinning and it’s time to dance!

I’ve illustrated that metaphor in a series of fine art images which have been featured “On TV!” in magazines, galleries and museums for more than a decade.

The technical concept:  fish are tossed by an assistant and are captured (photographed) in camera.   I use fish that I have collected and carry to typically arid locations far and near.   On one Denver NBC-TV broadcast we used real smelts!  The news special celebrated the 150th birthday of photography.

On October  6th I’ll be showing a new work, “Yipes!” shown here.  I was asked to present the print in the 35th Anniversary invitational group show, “Confluence”, at the Emmanuel Gallery on the Auraria Campus.    The opening reception is from 4-7 pm and you are invited.

It is my good fortune to work with Ron Landucci, fine art printer of Infinite Editions and Randolph Laub of Randolph Laub Studio who created an original profile to frame the piece.

In photography a silhouette is normally created against the light as in a french term, ‘contre-jour’.   I love this effect particularly in my Landscape of Wine series in the NW Italian region of Piedmont.   In the art of paper cutting out of  black paper creates a strong contrast telling a story emphasizing the lines and shapes of figures in silhouette.

Taking inspiration from a cool iphone app + Larry Kirkland’s public art piece, “East 2 West Source Point” + recent portraits I’ve created in silhouette this was fun to create.

The visible lines in the location  relate to the texture of the Carrara marble used to create this sculpture.
