What is a valentine?

A proverb says that “Saint Valentine brings the keys of roots”. Plants and flowers start to grow on this day. It has been celebrated as the day when the first work in the vineyards and in the fields commences. It is also said that birds propose to each other or marry on that day.

In Santa Fe, New Mexico today it’s quite warm and Spring like. Birds could be proposing. There are origins of “Valentine” going back to the Middle Ages.
Onward. Then in the 14th century Chaucer’s writing about love birds appealed to people.

This heart was created in the 1960’s by Alexander Girard, donor of his fine collection of folk art. He was Design Director of the Textile Division of Herman Miller, Inc. and his fabrics are notable for their expansive use of color and pattern. I found it at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe.
