Hal Gould opened the Camera Obscura Gallery at 13th and Bannock in downtown Denver in 1980 at age 60. For 31 years there was a continuous stream of remarkably high-quality photography shows, including the work of Eliot Porter, James Balog, Paul Harbaugh, Sebastiao Salgado, and Annie Liebovitz. And, here he’s with my colleague, Nora Feller.
Hal was famous in the international world of fine art photography. On a trip to NYC and a day at the AIPAD Conference, who did I run into? Hal.
I exhibited once in his gallery. He retired and closed the Camera Obscura on April 30, 2011. He enjoyed life and good wine with friends.
Hal died in June and on July 7th, we celebrated the 95 year life of Hal Gould. R.I.P. Hal.
