Fun with Fish and Cubes
Fun with Fish and Cubes
Motion Series: This work is a result of my passionate pursuit of the floating suspension of movement. Each photograph is created in a single exposure made on site. They represented the capture of a single moment in time, in camera and on film. All black & white images were made on film. Second, I add spatial relationships of objects to the concept that photographs represent reality. I examine anachronistically with a bit of synchronism the object-context metaphor. The black & white checked pattern I used emphasized the visual result of motion.
Fish Series: Here, my objet d’art becomes a fish. The fish becomes part of a subjective temporal distortion with an arid place of strength. We may all feel like a “Fish Out Of Water” in our daily landscape. This series is ongoing. The most recent captures were digitally made in camera. I always travel with a fish.
Infrared Series: James O. Milmoe was my first photography professor. Wow. He was an expert with film. After I learned about the chemistry and science behind the art of photography, I found Kodak’s black & white infrared film and developer. After lots of testing I was drawn to the drama and exaggerated effects of temperature, atmosphere and living plants infrared brought to my work. = Art + Science.

Working with Artists: Photography of Art
My appreciation for the arts began during grade school in my small town. At that time I was first published nationally with a wood block print and encouraged by my art teacher who was voted National Art Education Association Teacher of the Year. We visited artist studios in Lindsberg, Kansas and the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City. Now I couldn’t be happier than in galleries and great museums around the world. Working with wonderful artists is an honor. Finding the Einstein quote, “Art is the expression of the deepest thought in the simplest way” with a perfect espresso outdoors at the Castello di Rivoli near Turin, at the same time…perfetto!
Dachshunds and Best Friends
Dachshunds and Best Friends
A graphic designer client called me about a photograph to illustrate the story of Don Quixote. “It would be fun to do something different.” We agreed to talk again. Sitting at my feet looking up at me was Ramon, the wire-haired Dachshund dog. I was thinking how cute and funny he could be. There wasn’t time for a grooming. Ramon sat for the picture with a hat made of a tortilla. Yes, really. Immediately after we got the shot, the prop hat reward was eaten. He liked go fast for the camera. (and a treat)
Water
Water
I combine the pictorialism of the late 1800’s with the technology of the 21st Century resulting in a raw and immediate capture of a transparent liquid which forms the world’s streams, lakes, oceans and rain, and is the major constituent of the fluids of living things. This series involves capturing water and it’s magical qualities of cool stillness creating it’s visual charm of color and pattern when meeting light and motion.

While on assignment for The New York Times, I paused walking and looked up at a high, red rock face ahead. My subject, Jon Krakauer said, would you like me to go up there? Sure! I said. That was the moment.
I love photographing people. Whenever I look at what’s in front of me, with or without a camera, I can’t help think of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Magnum quotes him –
“To take a photograph is to align the head, the eye and the heart. It’s a way of life.”
